Currently Reading: Anansi Boys
After reading American Gods, I was curious to check out more Neil Gaiman and the lovely Ali at Pies and Puggles told me to check out Anansi Boys next. Let's just say that I'm glad she did.
Charles has been estranged from his father for decades, when he discovers that he has died. He flies back to his childhood home in Florida for the funeral, at which he finds out from an elderly neighbor that his father was Anansi: spider, trickster, god.
And not only that, but that he also has a brother he never knew about.
Upon returning to London, Charles gets in touch with his brother the way the elderly neighbor told him to, by whispering to a spider. Just like that, his brother, Spider, shows up.
At first, it seems that having Spider around is great, but things quickly turn when Spider takes over Fat Charlie's (his father's, and now Spider's nickname for Charles) life, starting with his job and ending with his fiance.
Fat Charlie takes some extreme methods to get rid of Spider, which begins a series of scary, supernatural events that rock both of their lives.
The story is smart and funny, and while relying on Anansi's trickster mythology, it doesn't become burdensome. Highly recommended.

Cool cover! I got it when it first came out and the cover was super dark. Way darker than I thought the story was. Thanks for the shout-out and I'm so glad you enjoyed the book!
