Currently Reading: 1Q84

Why did I not start reading Murakami earlier?

Two seemingly unrelated people living in Tokyo are going about their very different lives.  One, Aomame, is an instructor at a sports club and has a second, more interesting job as well.  The other, Tengo Kawana, is a school teacher and an aspiring writer.

Each of their stories goes on for almost a third of the book without any sort of connection to the other.  Aomame finds herself going through some sort of passageway into another world, 1Q84, and putting her special set of skills to use.  Tengo becomes a ghostwriter for a promising "fiction" manuscript, Air Chrysalis, which is an enthralling story, but lacks style.

Then suddenly, the two stories become very, very connected.

Vague enough for you?

I really don't want to give anything away because I've been enjoying the twists and surprises.  Murakami is known for his "magical realism" and I can't get enough of it.  I'm glad the book is almost 1200 pages because I simply want more and more of it.

However, I am getting dangerously close to the end and find myself completely invested in the characters and what will happen to them.

1Q84 manages to be an epic love story wrapped in a mystery cloaked in a thriller.

Yes, it's long, but if a story is this good, you truly don't want it to end.

  1. Love your book recommendations! I finally got Night Circus from the library and just started it. So far so good. Now I have another one to add to my queue.

  2. So glad you're liking it! And definitely give this one a shot, too. It's a bit more difficult, but perfect since I'm in a "back to school" frame of mind right now!
